What are rangers good for?
My main is usually a monk, and while I have played around with a ranger in the past with pve, I would usually just run a burning arrow or BM build and try to do decent damage. However, looking at some of the other class boards, it seems that warriors, necros and sins have the dps roles covered quite effectively. Should I even be trying to compete in terms of dps with these classes? What would I as a ranger really be good for in pve nowadays? What types of heroes should I be looking to support this role(s)?
I often run an AP caller build on my monk with discord heroes, and that is amazingly boring after awhile. I am looking for a non-caster with a different feel, but with purpose (second rate dps being a less desirable purpose )
Thanks for your help.

Well if you actually think warriors have good dps then i dont see why u dont think rangers do, but really niether are that great at it, rangers are better at pestering entire groups rather than pounding 1 man, take splinter barrage or just a regular condition spreader (non-singular damage), dps - no, effective - yes...or for more damage mabye R/D expert scythe build (but even thats also somewhat non-singular damage, as are how scythes are)...but yeh thats jsut my opinion on things.
_____rangers are not the one minded punishers, they wont get first place all that often, but they will be in the top 3 more then any other class is in the top 5 for allmost any specific role -Jacks of All Trades- -Masters of None, Leaders of All-

What are rangers good for?
Absolutely nothing! *dances*
LOL j/p.. they good for conditions and ranged damage/rupts. They got raped by Anet though, ever since the ultimate 25/90 to all pew pew-related skills... So, my pref would be Warrior > Ranger.

In pvp they have good armor against ele damage, can spread condition easy, and apply decent preasure + spirits.

Rangrs can also be known as a toolbox.
They can spread multiple conditions, completely shut down casters with either daze or interupts. They have defensive traps (not the most effective thing though), interupts, reasonable DPS, AoE damage from splinter barrage.

In PvE they're generally used for interruption, but also areas with enemies that group together closely or in large numbers. They have a lot of neat traps, but that is a bit hard to do when you're in a group pushing forward.

You are a Monk. Go play PvP for a bit, you'll find out.
Nah seriously, PvE is mainly just BHA plus some other gimmick skills. PvP is where the ranger shines, single handed screwing over all forms of casters through pressure and interrupts.

Rangers can spike targets, killing single targets in a couple of seconds.
Other strong points:
Condition pressure to many targets.
Survuvability high.
Group damage\Barrage.
